Not all boudoir photographers are created equal and trust me, this is a decision that can make or break your experience.
If you've never done a boudoir photoshoot before you probably have no idea where to start, what to look for, what to ask or how to find a photographer who is the right fit for YOU and the experience you want!
Don't worry, I've got all the answers you need. Here are my top 7 tips on exactly how, where and what to look for...
1. Where to Start: Google Is Your Bestie
First thing’s first, fire up that search engine! Search for “boudoir photographer near me” or “boudoir photography + [your city]” or simply "boudoir + [your city]" to get a feel for who’s out there.
Once you’ve got some options, it’s time to start narrowing down the list to find YOUR perfect match!
2. Photographers Who Specialize in Boudoir
This often gets over looked, but you want a pro who knows how to pose every beautiful curve perfectly with zero awkwardness.
Boudoir specialists are experts at hyping you up, calming your nerves and guiding you through every step of the process. They know exactly how to create an amazing and comfortable experience.
How To Tell If They Specialize In Boudoir?
They don't show any other type of artwork or galleries on their website or landing page. It will be dedicated completely to Boudoir.
3. Review Their Portfolio (Like A Pro)
When looking at their website photo gallery or Instagram page, look out for these things:
Is it diverse? You want to see a range of body types, ethnicities, ages and women who look like you. A boudoir photographer who can pose all body types and make every woman look and feel incredible, regardless of shape or size, is a keeper!
Do you love their style? Are you looking for dark and moody, light and airy or a mixture of both? Do you want your images to be trendy or timeless?
Make sure their style is something you can see yourself loving for years to come.
Full Gallery Or Highlight Images? Is there multiple photos of the same client or just the best shot from every photoshoot? This will show you how consistent their work is and if they can deliver quality shots from start to finish.
Facial expressions and poses: Do the women look relaxed, confident, and glowing? Or do they look stiff and uncomfortable? This will tell you a lot about how good the photographer is at making their clients feel at ease.
4.Schedule A Consultation With Your Photographer
A professional boudoir photographer will offer a 1 on 1 consultation (in person or over Zoom) to chat with you about your vision, answer all your questions, walk you through their process and what to expect and make sure you'll be a good fit together.
5. Do You Vibe With Them?
Super Important!!! Being comfortable with your photographer will make your boudoir experience exciting and empowering rather than stressful and nerve racking.
If you're not comfortable with your photographer, it WILL show in your images. Nervousness shows up in your poses, hands, facial expressions and eyes and unfortunately, no amount of photo editing can get rid of that.
Also, your experience — be it amazing or maybe not so much — will come to mind every time you look at your photos, and that will impact how much you love them.
6. What Are Your Values? (Quality vs. Price)
Let’s be real... you can't get a filet mignon for the price of a big mac, and there’s a reason for that! If it’s super cheap, there’s probably a reason.
Think about what you really want from your boudoir experience and photos.
If you want an empowering, luxury experience where you're pampered and celebrated by an expert who delivers high-quality products, expect to pay more.
But if you’re cool with a basic experience and “okay” images, you can definitely find cheaper options.
Some photographers offer a boutique, luxury vibe, while others are more “shoot and burn” with high volume and low cost. Neither is right or wrong, it’s all about finding a photographer who is the perfect fit for you.
7. Digital Security: Keep Those Pics Safe!
Boudoir photos are intimate, so you need to know your images will be handled with care.
Ask how they store, share, and deliver your photos. If digital security isn’t mentioned, that’s a big red 🚩 flag. You deserve peace of mind knowing your photos are safe.
Under the Canadian copyright law, the photographer owns the copyright to the photos. Which means, they technically don’t need your permission to use your photos on their website, social media, or anywhere else.
At our studio, we don’t share, post, or show your images to anyone unless you give us written permission, after you’ve seen your photos.
We take digital security seriously. We password-protect all our devices, use secure encrypted internet connections, encrypt all backup hard drives and store them in locked safes. Plus, we only team up with product companies that share our strict privacy values, so you can relax knowing your images are always in good hands.
At the end of the day, choosing the right boudoir photographer is about more than just gorgeous photos. It’s about finding someone who makes you feel amazing, who respects your privacy and who truly understands the art of boudoir.
Do your research, trust your gut, and get ready to slay your session!
I wish you the most amazing and epic Boudoir Experience! It truly is transformational and life-changing!
